(formas apocopadas; verb: apocopar)

Various Spanish words are shortened in certain circumstances, as follows.

bueno → buen  before a singular masculine noun or infinitive

malo → mal  before a singular masculine noun or infinitive

grande → gran  before a singular noun (m or f) or infinitive

uno → un  before a singular masculine noun or adjective, or before a feminine noun that starts a- or ha-

alguno → algún  before a singular masculine noun or adjective

ninguno → ningún  before a singular masculine noun or adjective

cualquiera → cualquier  before a singular noun (m or f)

tanto → tan  before any adjective or adverb

cuánto → cuán  before any adjective or adverb

santo → san  before a masculine saint’s name, with a few exceptions.

e.g.,

buen hombre – good man  (but buena mujer)

buen vivir – good living

mal momento – bad moment

gran hombre, gran mujer – great man, great woman

un hombre, un arma, un hacha – a man, a weapon, an axe

un buen coche – a good car

algún día – some day (but alguna arma)

ningún día – (negative) any day

a cualquier precio – at any [whatever] price

tan pequeña – so small

¡cuán idiota! – how stupid!
