Mechanical setup

  1. Unfold/assemble tripod and extend column and legs as required.
  2. Attach DJI RS3 Mini gimbal to tripod (directly, or using QuickLinks).
  3. Adjust gimbal to working position:
Unlock roll ‘cone’ lock, rotate so roll arm horizonal, re-lock.
Unlock roll slider with grey lever, slide roll arm to pre-determined position, re-lock).

  4. Add camera + lens (without lens cap but with hood) to RS3 Mini (this assumes clamp is already on RS3 mini at far right and plate is on camera).
Camera plate at far right (against stop).
  5. Plug USB↔L1 cable between camera 2.5mm socket (4-segment) and RS3 Mini USB-C socket (on front of tilt arm).
  6. Extend and/or tilt screen in same way as when balanced/setup.
  7. Turn on camera; mode knob C1 (if set up):  A, f/5.6, ISO 100, Electronic shutter.
  8. Select delay shoot on top-left knob (2-sec in camera setup).
  9. If using a zoom lens, set to desired length.

Gimbal startup

  1. Unlock three axes ‘cone’ locks on gimbal from top down; camera should be close to balance (if not, check screen and hood positioned as when balanced, and lens cap removed).
  2. Turn on RS3 Mini gimbal: press and hold On/Off button (on right side) for 1+ seconds
→ gimbal should beep, light screen and level; balance icon (top right of four) should be green.

Start app & fix camera focus & exposure

  1. Open DJI Ronin app on phone; device name (DJI RS3 MINI-xxxxxx) should show blue in box at top shortly (if not tap ‘Connect’ and then on device name).
  2. Touch ‘Create’.
  3. Touch ‘Virtual joystick’, then ‘Recenter’ to level and centre the camera.
(Use virtual joystick left/right, or mechanically pan tripod, to centre point of interest.)
  4. Switch camera to MF, then focus (first touch [AF] on-screen, then fine-tune using peaking).

  5. Ensure app shutter button is white (if red, for video, switch using bottom-left icon).
  6. Tap White Button to take single shot (this records horizon and also measures exposure).
Record compass bearing of prominent feature for later Set North and/or GPS.

  7. Press camera AF/AE Lock toggle button (according to camera setup) to lock exposure.
‘AEL’ should show at bottom left camera screen above focus icon.
NB: Many things (e.g., touch shutter) turn off AE Lock.
  8. Use back arrow to ‘Create’ screen’.

Take panorama

  1. Touch ‘Panorama’, check/set the four settings (e.g., Sensor Type M4/3, Focal Length 45mm, Overlap 30%, Interval 3s – the 3s interval allows for 2s camera delay).

  2. Set two opposite corners for panorama by touching corner and drag to approximate position
then fine tune using virtual joystick (tap icon) – to see the number of shots, etc., tap icon again to hide joystick.
(Corner-setting can also be done with Push mode enabled or by dragging corners by touch.)

  3. Ensure AEL still showing (exiting Sleep, etc. can cancel); press AF/AE Lock if not.

  4. Press white button to start panorama imaging (if it doesn’t start, check ‘Contact→Virtual Joystick’ page is not in video mode).

After capture, tapping white button repeats panorama.

When done:

  1. Turn off  RS3 Mini: about a 1-sec press & release.

  2. Lock all three gimbal axes, using ‘cone’ switches.

  3. Unplug USB↔L1 cable.

  4. Turn off  Camera, remove from gimbal, and pack.

  5. Unlock roll slider with grey lever, slide roll arm to ≈4.0, re-lock.
  6. Unlock roll ‘cone’ lock, fold gimbal 90° on roll axis, re-lock.

  7. Remove gimbal from tripod and pack.
