Palm Globe is a program which displays the Earth as a globe on a PalmPilotTM, Palm IIITM, or IBM WorkpadTM. You can choose to view the globe from any direction, or select one of a number of 'standard' views.
In addition to simply displaying a picture of the world, Palm Globe will also let you light the globe as though by sunlight – so you can see at a glance those areas of the globe where the sun has risen, and where it is night. Optionally, the direction of the sun can be shown for any viewpoint, so you can use Palm Globe as a sun compass.
Further options add shading to the globe for a three-dimensional effect, rotate the globe with the sun, and let you measure distances between two points on the globe. Other features are described in detail in the Palm Globe documentation listed below.
Palm Globe was originally written as a demonstration program for the IBM Workpad, and IBM has kindly given me permission to continue to distribute it privately. However, I no longer have a Palm development system and hence have no current plans to enhance or change the program; use at your own risk.

The Palm Globe documentation is available in two formats in addition to the on-line (.html) version below: PDF/Acrobat (.pdf), and PostScript (.ps). The program itself (pglobe.prc) is included in the downloadable .zip file, which also includes the software license and the documentation in .pdf format. The Palm Globe documentation and software are distributed free of charge under the conditions of the IBM Employee-Written Software program. History and other implementations

PMGlobe was first released in November 1991 as a 16-bit application for OS/2. It was then converted to a 32-bit OS/2 application in 1992, and enhanced through 1994. The most recent version is called PMGlobe2. In 1998, much of the geographical code from PMGlobe was reused for the Palm OS version of the program, which was released in August 1998. This version includes a Sun compass option, as it is used on a portable device. Both of these versions are still available from the links below, though be warned that they may not run on the latest versions of their operating systems. The current version, PMGlobe3, runs on Windows, and was ported from the OS/2 code in 2003. This added the ability to wrap arbitrary images on the globe, automatic time zone handling for clocks, and a screensaver option.
